| SEANET: High-speed communications between vessels in the same fleet at a distance from the shore |

Theme 1 : Maritime safety and securityAll sections of the maritime community – anti-piracy, anti-drug trafficking and anti-pollution fleets, ferries, cruise liners and national navies – have voiced the need for inter-ship communication, particularly when sailing far offshore. SEANET will enable the crews of vessels sailing at a distance of up to 20 to 30 nautical miles from each other to communicate whether close to the coastline or out at sea. In addition to studying propagation above the sea surface, the project will develop C or Ku-band electronic scanning arrays, will devise a mechanical or electronic method for stabilising the action of an array to compensate for vessel motion and will establish tracking processes associated with spatio-temporal switching of the waveform and with reconfiguring the appropriate network. The ultimate aim of the project is to provide sailing communities with a low-cost, reconfigurable communications system for high-speed exchanges over long distances. SEANET will offer major technological advances in communication networks for maritime applications. The system will significantly increase connection throughput and duration as long as other ships equipped with the same system are present within the communication zone. Initially designed to respond to issues of maritime security, this telecommunications system could be deployed in other areas, thereby increasing the project’s potential outcomes.
