Fishing and sustainable development - Pôle Mer Bretagne For fishing and aquaculture, the key issue is to develop activities based on a sound approach to and a better understanding of biological resources.

Fishing industry professionals are already working more closely with research centres and equipment manufacturers. Together they are devising innovative ways of improving catch gear, optical and acoustic location systems and methods for real-time data acquisition and transmission. Other research and development within the industry relate to crew safety, vessel energy evaluation and assisted navigation.

INNOVATIVE aquaculture

The long-term future of marine stocks will be assured by improved fishing techniques that help conserve ecosystems and by developing responsible fish-farming methods. There have also been some promising developments in the area of seaweed farming. Current research, which has reached different stages depending on species, ranges from the study of little known properties to industrial farming processes.
