COCORISCO: Knowledge, Understanding and Management of Coastal Risks PDF Imprimer Envoyer

Theme 5: Environmental and coastal planning and development

The COCORISCO project (which stands for COnnaissance, COmpréhension et gestion des RISques COtiers) is concerned with the coastal risks associated with the mobility of coastal traffic and its consequences in terms of erosion and submersion. The background to the project is the growing vulnerability of coastal areas in the face of environmental change.

The aim of the COCORISCO project is to advance understanding of the risks and to move towards developing prevention and management strategies. It involves deepening knowledge and understanding at regional level of the risks that occur in littoral zones, as a result of present-day environmental changes, by integrating the variability of these changes and their impact from a global to a local level over the short and long term. On the basis of this increased knowledge and understanding, the project will help support current public policy regarding managing coastal risks by perfecting specific methods and tools for assessing the four elements that comprise littoral risks: their uncertainties, challenges, representation and management. The impact of Johanna, a storm that hit the Brittany coast in March 2008, and the disastrous toll wreaked by Xynthia on the Vendée coast in February 2010, reveal the weaknesses that are often highlighted in the way these risks are currently managed in France.
