Biotechnology

Marine, animal and plant organisms represent hitherto under-exploited sources of new molecules particularly for use in medicine and agriculture.

The laboratories of IFREMER, the Institut Universitaire Européen de la Mer (UBO), CNRS in Roscoff and the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Concarneau have increased their knowledge of a great variety of marine organisms and now possess unrivalled collections of marine microbes.  They are currently ready to develop these commercially in collaboration with biotechnology firms.  In Pleubian, the CEVA (Centre d’Etudes et de Valorisation des Algues) is already working with food-processing and cosmetics companies.  From initial processing to commercial development, this sector currently represents over 1 800 jobs in Brittany.
